Key Ingredients for Fried Apples

  • Apples – We prefer a tart apple like Granny Smith, but any firm kind of apples work. Think Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Pink Lady or Fuji if you want something sweeter.
  • Butter – One stick of real, salted butter gives this dish its rich flavor and golden glaze.
  • Sugar – A mix of granulated white sugar and brown sugar provides that perfect balance of sweetness and depth.
  • Cinnamon & Nutmeg – These warm spices make the whole house smell like fall, no matter the time of year.  The right amount of spice is what makes these easy fried apple recipe one of my favorite fall traditions.

How to Make Southern Fried Apples

This dish is proof that simplicity can be delicious.

sliced granny smith apples

Prepare the apples: Start by washing, coring, and slicing five large apples. Try to keep the slices about the same size so they cook evenly. You can use an apple slicer if you want.  We like to leave the peel on for a bit of texture and color, but feel free to remove it if that’s your preference.

Melt the butter: In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. I like to use my cast iron skillet for this—it holds heat beautifully and gives the apples a lovely caramelized edge.

Cook the apples: Add the sliced apples to the skillet, lower the heat, and cover. Let them cook gently for about 10 minutes, stirring often so they don’t burn.

Mix the sugar and spices: While the apples are softening, mix together granulated sugar and brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and a dash of nutmeg and salt.

Add the sugar mixture: Uncover the skillet and sprinkle the sugar and spice mixture over the apples. Stir everything together and cook for another 5 to 10 minutes. By now, the apples should be tender and the sauce beautifully syrupy.

Serve warm: You can enjoy them straight from the skillet or dress them up with some variations.

How to Serve Fried Apples

This recipe shines in so many ways. Here are some of our family’s favorite ways to serve fried apples:

  • Over Ice Cream—Spoon warm fried apples over a big scoop of vanilla ice cream for an easy dessert that tastes like apple pie without the crust. Add a drizzle of caramel for extra indulgence!
  • On Pancakes or French Toast—Fried apples make the perfect topping for breakfast favorites. Try them on your favorite homemade pancakes or thick-cut French toast. They’re like syrup, fruit, and love—all in one.
  • With Pork Chops—This might surprise you, but fried apples pair beautifully with savory meats. The sweetness of the apples and the warmth of the spices complement juicy pork chops in the most delicious way, try it!

Baking Tips & Variations

Even an easy recipe like this one has room for customization and variations. Here are a few tips and variations to make it your own:

  • Apple Varieties Matter—Granny Smith is a great all-around apple for cooking, thanks to its firm texture and tartness. But don’t hesitate to try others like Jonagold, Braeburn, or even a mix for more complex flavor.
  • Don’t Skimp on the Butter—This is one of those recipes where the butter does a lot of the work. It helps cook the apples evenly and creates that irresistible glaze. If you’re dairy-free, you could use a vegan butter substitute, but real butter gives the best flavor.
  • Add a Splash of Maple—Want a more autumn-inspired twist? Add a tablespoon of pure maple syrup to the sugar mixture for a deeper, more earthy sweetness.
  • Brighten It Up—If your apples are on the sweeter side, a squeeze of fresh lemon juice can help balance the flavor.
  • Make It Pie-Inspired—Add a touch of vanilla extract and a little allspice or cloves to the spice mix for a more complex, pie-like taste.

Recipe FAQs

Can I make fried apples ahead of time?

Yes! Store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3–4 days. Reheat gently in a skillet or microwave before serving.

Can I freeze fried apples?

Absolutely. Let them cool completely, then store in a freezer-safe bag or container. They’ll keep for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat on the stove.

My apples turned mushy—what went wrong?

This usually happens if the slices are too thin or the apples cooked too long. Be sure to slice them thick enough and monitor closely while they cook.
