When our microwave went kaput and we decided not to replace it two things hit hard: no popcorn and no coffee reheats. Thankfully we quickly reverted to the olden days of stovetop popcorn and reheating coffee in a pot on the stove. (Side note: we don’t have a coffee pot because we much prefer French press. Don’t sleep on the French press.) If you’ve never made stove top popcorn you are in for a treat! It’s takes less than 5 minutes to make and you can season it to your liking. After learning about some heath concerns with microwave popcorn, I was glad we’d make the switch.

Concerns with microwave popcorn

I’m not trying to scare you, but that junk we’ve popped in the microwave for years isn’t great for you. Ever heard of popcorn lung? It’s an actual thing. According to studies, hundreds of workers in popcorn plants were diagnosed with this disease and several died. It’s caused by diacetyl, a chemical that used in bags to give microwave popcorn a buttery smell and flavor. Thankfully, it was “phased out” between 2002 and 2015. That wasn’t that long ago y’all!

More bad news…now studies are showing that many companies use harmful chemicals to coat their packaging called PFAS. PFAS are found in many household non-stick products like cookware. That’s why I made the switch to stainless steel and cast iron. The GOOD NEWS is that there are other options if you’re a popcorn snacker. Today, I’m teaching you the ways of the stovetop method.

What do I need to make stovetop popcorn

  • Popcorn Kernels: We prefer organic sprouted popcorn and I have it delivered to my door through Thrive Market! Sprouted products make it easier for your body to absorb good vitamins and minerals.
  • Medium Saucepan with a lid: I’ve used my dutch oven and stainless pots. The dutch oven is pretty but it’s heavy when it’s time to shake it around.
  • Oil: I like to use coconut or avocado oil. You can use any oil you like but I prefer the health benefits of coconut or avocado oil and you can’t taste it so no worries there.
  • Melted Butter or Salt: Get the good stuff. Real butter where the only ingredient is cream and salt. Also, if you haven’t tried Redmond Real Salt you’re missing out.

Is popcorn healthy?

Popcorn is a whole grain and loaded with fiber. High fiber whole grains have been proven to lower risks of diabetes, heart disease, and even some cancers. So yes, when popcorn is air popped and not too heavily seasoned it’s a great snack choice! Also, be aware that the oil you choose makes a difference. Avocado oil has the same great benefits of olive oil but has a higher smoking point so it’s a better choice for cooking at high temps. It’s heart healthy as well!
